Measures that may be used to try to prevent premature labour include:

  • family planning to ensure proper spacing of births
  • regular attendance at antenatal clinic to spot problems early - BP; urine; possibly, high vaginal swabs for detection of beta haemolytic streptococci, listeria
  • personalised education on lifestyle, socioeconomic conditions, and medical history
  • careful follow up of high risk pregnancies picked up at antenatal clinics and from history of previous premature delivery
  • NICE suggest a choice of prophylactic vaginal progesterone or cervical cerclage as options to prevent preterm labour (1)
