liver disease - mild/moderate liver disease is distinguishable from DIC by having normal fibrinogen levels and normal or slightly reduced platelets; severe disease is less difficult to distinguish
vitamin K deficiency - fibrinogen level and platelet count unaffected
sepsis - fibrinogen level usually normal
thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura - fibrinogen level and other coagulation tests usually normal
