The indications for Swan-Ganz catheterisation include:

  • cardiac failure or pulmonary oedema:
    • to monitor response to therapy

  • in a patient with a "white-out" chest radiograph:
    • to differentiate between adult respiratory distress syndrome and cardiogenic pulmonary oedema

  • cardiogenic shock:
    • in a patient who has hypotension in the absence of hypovolaemia
    • the CVP is 10 cm H2O or more

  • in patients with a suspected ventricular septal defect, e.g. post-myocardial infarction
