A DVT is characterised by a well-opacified vein on venography that maintains the same dimensions and location when visualised in two different planes.

Occlusive thrombi may not be shown, but the absence of contrast does not necessarily indicate thrombosis. An occlusive thrombus may be detected by the spread of contrast via collateral vessels.

Non-occlusive thrombus may be seen as a translucent area surrounded by an opaque border of contrast within the confines of the vessel.
