Invasive aspergillosis:

  • mostly impacts the immunocompromised population, eg, people living with advanced stages of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), those with hematologic malignancies, prolonged neutropenia, long-term corticosteroid use, those on immunosuppression, and recipients of hematopoietic or solid organ transplants
  • may occur following broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy
  • is not uncommon: 4% of unselected patients dying in European tertiary referral centres have invasive aspergillosis at post-mortem
  • is underdiagnosed: a third are diagnosed at death
