Treatment

Authoring team

If there is evidence of any underlying disorder, for example schizophrenia, then this must be treated.

In cases where the underlying diagnosis is not certain then treatment with a phenothiazine such as chlorpromazine may be of use.

In patients with no other underlying disorder psychotherapy may be beneficial, but drug treatment is often ineffective.

If there appears to be the risk of violence then the best treatment for this condition may be geographical separation.

This condition has a very poor prognosis, and is usually only resolved by the complete termination of the current relationship. There is potential for recurrence in future relationships.
