Important preventive measures include:

  • routine immunisation of children and adults
  • antenatal screening, preconception and postnatal vaccination
  • travel vaccinations and malaria chemoprophylaxis
  • immediate action on suspected exposure to infection particularly for rabies and malaria
  • animal, mosquito and tick bite protection
  • food and water precautions (preparation and consumption) and personal hygiene (faecal-oral route)
  • occupational risks (appropriate precautions)
  • sexual behaviour risk awareness (safe sex)
  • blood transfusion and IV equipment. Plan strategies and carry medical kits, syringes, neeles and sutures.
  • I.V. drugs, tattoos and piercing (avoid shared needles)
