Prevention of infection
Important preventive measures include:
- routine immunisation of children and adults
- antenatal screening, preconception and postnatal vaccination
- travel vaccinations and malaria chemoprophylaxis
- immediate action on suspected exposure to infection particularly for rabies and malaria
- animal, mosquito and tick bite protection
- food and water precautions (preparation and consumption) and personal hygiene (faecal-oral route)
- occupational risks (appropriate precautions)
- sexual behaviour risk awareness (safe sex)
- blood transfusion and IV equipment. Plan strategies and carry medical kits, syringes, neeles and sutures.
- I.V. drugs, tattoos and piercing (avoid shared needles)
