Definitive diagnosis relies upon the clinical picture and positive stool cultures for Salmonella. These may remain positive for up to 8 weeks in 30% of cases.

Epidemiologic assistance is required to pinpoint the source.

A positive stool culture diagnosis of salmonella does not exclude the possibility of inflammatory bowel disease with coincident Salmonellosis.
