Tetanus prophylaxis

Authoring team

Tetanus prophylaxis is required following suspected tetanus exposure, when the patient is also thought to be susceptible to tetanus infection.

If the immune status of a patient is not known, the patient should be assumed to be non-immune.

Detailed guidance is available in the linked menu item.

NOTE: The single most important step in preventing tetanus infection is good wound cleaning with debridement of dead tissue.
