In preparation for a femoral hernia repair, the following are relevant:

  • choice of anaesthesia:
    • general anaesthesia: preferrable and mandatory if any possibility of strangulation
    • local anaesthesia: requires extensive infiltration
  • shaving:
    • immediately pre-operatively
    • both the groin on the affected side and the lower abdomen
  • catheterization: reduces the risk of the extraperitoneal bladder forming one side of the hernial sac
  • treatment of obstruction if strangulation has occurred:
    • intravenous fluids
    • nasogastric aspiration
