Type I is characterized by:

  • mesangial cell proliferation
  • subendothelial electron-dense deposits
  • low levels of C3 and C4 (depletion of complement through the classical pathway)
  • may be associated with:
    • hepatitis B antigenaemia
    • bacterial endocarditis
    • ventriculo-atrial shunts
    • streptococcal infections
  • light microscopy
    • enlarged glomeruli
    • lobulated due to mesangial cell proliferation
    • double contour basement membrane
  • E.M.
    • mesangial interposition
    • subendothelial deposits
  • immunofluorescence: IgG, C3
