Clinical features
- patients are usually more than 40 years old at presentation
- there may be a history of preceding joint disorder or pain - this may especially be true in young patients presenting with this disorder
- pain - insidious onset, progressive increase over months or years, exacerbated by exertion, relieved by rest, worse at night
- stiffness - worse after period of rest
- in advanced disease there may be swelling and deformity
- the symptoms of OA may be intermittent, with periods of remission lasting for months
- OA is not associated with any systemic manifestations
