Synovectomy is the surgical removal of diseased synovium from a joint; it is a palliative treatment for severe rheumatoid arthritis.

A synovectomy may be performed arthroscopically. An open synovectomy is a serious operation requiring considerable rehabilitation.

Synovectomy results in:

  • reduced incidence of joint flare-ups
  • reduced risk of tendon rupture
