This injury often is the result of a motorcycle accident. It is common for this fracture to be open because the tibia is subcutaneous.

Fractures in the lower third of the tibia tend to heal slowly.

A fracture of the tibia at the ankle may be associated with a fibula fracture (Maisonneuve fracture).

If there is a fractured tibia and fibula the knee and ankle must also x-rayed.
