Traction

Authoring team

Traction is often an effective means of treating a closed fracture without operative intervention. The principle is simple. Force is applied to the limb distal to the fracture so as to exert a continuous pull in the long axis of the bone. The traction must be sufficient to overcome muscular contraction and pull the bones out to length, but not so strong that it prevents union.
