Amantadine increases dopamine release and inhibits its uptake at dopaminergic synapses.
It may be effective in mild parkinsonism. The usual dose in 100mg bd. An effect is usually evident within 3 days.
Amantadine may be used as a treatment for people with early Parkinson's disease (PD) but should not be a drug of first choice (1).
Amantadine may be used to reduce dyskinesia in people with later PD (1).
