Prognosis

Authoring team

The prognosis in intraventricular haemorrhage is strongly dependent on the size of the clot:

  • small clot, just around the source, very good prognosis because the germinal layer involutes
  • larger clots cause more widespread damage

By the time a baby leaves hospital after IVH, a rough delineation into risk groups can be made:

  • low risk: normal scan or uncomplicated IVH
  • medium risk: ventricular dilatation
  • high risk: hydrocephalus or cerebral atrophy
