Secondary neuralgia
Secondary neuralgias are due to physical damage to nerves. These include:
- postherpetic neuralgia
- brainstem lesions e.g. tumour, demyelination, thrombosis, syringomyelia
- base of skull tumours e.g. deep lobe tumours of parotid, nasopharyngeal tumours
- an elongated styloid process may irritate the glossopharyngeal nerve as it passes the tonsil fossa
- a glomus tumour may involve the glossopharyngeal nerve
- Sluder's or anterior ethmoidal neuralgia
