Possible disadvantages of general anaesthesia in obstetrics include :-

  • fetal depression - due to anaesthetic agents passing the placental barrier - secondary fetal depression due to hypotension or maternal hypoxaemia
  • aspiration (often labour ward patients have full stomachs) - Mendelson's syndrome
