Maternal distress
Maternal distress may be caused by:
- a long first stage
- pre-existing disease in the mother e.g. hypertension, cardiac defects and pulmonary disease
Mental distress results in ineffective voluntary pushes.
Physical distress is characterised by:
- a rising pulse rate
- dehydration
- slight pyrexia
