Symmetrical IUGR (compared with asymmetrical IUGR)
Causes of symmetrical IUGR include:
- idiopathic
- chromosomal abnormalities
- TORCH infections
- maternal smoking
- maternal alcohol/opiate abuse
- chronic maternal nutritional deficiency
- ionising radiation
- sickle cell disease
Causes of asymmetrical IUGR include:
- idiopathic
- pre-eclampsia
- maternal renal or cardiac disease
- mutiple gestation
