Ofloxacin

Ofloxacin is a newer 4-quinolone than ciprofloxacin which offers some advantages:

  • once daily dosage
  • no interaction with theophyllines

Dosage details include:

  • lower respiratory tract infection = 400 mg daily, increasing to 800 mg in divided dose, in serious infection
  • UTI 200 mg - 400 mg once daily increasing to 800 mg in a divided dose, if necessary, in upper UTI
  • uncomplicated gonorrhoea = 400 mg stat
