Chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis

  • this term is used to describe a rare, heterogeneous group of syndromes in which affected individuals with congenital, endocrinological or immunological disorders develop recurrent or persistent mucosal, cutaneous or nail infections with Candida albicans
  • CMC often has an onset in infancy or childhood
  • the initial affected site is the mouth - however lesions may occur on the trunk, hands, feet and scalp
  • in general, patients seldom develop deep-seated Candida infections
  • treatment of candidiasis is with short courses of oral antifungals - relapse of candidiasis is common - remission has been achieved with treatment with oral ketoconazole
