There are various techniques that have been described for the elicitation of finger jerk reflexes. One commonly used involves:

  • patient rests his palm facing upwards with the fingers slightly flexed
  • examiner interlocks his hands over the patient's upturned fingers
  • the examiner lets the tendon hammer fall and strike his own fingers
  • an intact reflex will produce slight flexion of the patient's upturned fingers
