Hypervariable regions are introns within nuclear DNA containing 6-8 base pairs which cyclically repeat along the same stretch. Guanine and cytosine occur particularly frequently and in association with each other. The number of repeats of the hypervariable region is highly polymorphic and almost unique to the individual. They are essential to the process of DNA fingerprinting.
