  • the gastrointestinal tract is inaccessible
  • complete rest of the gastrointestinal tract is needed
  • there is a functional derangement of the gastrointestinal tract
  • enteral feeding is not meeting the nutritional requirements of an individual due to the limited function of the gastrointestinal tract
