Transgenic animals

Authoring team

Transgenic animals are animals in which the normal DNA constitution is supplemented by a specific DNA addition in all cells. Hence, it differs from cell fusion studies in that the effect of the change on the entire organism can be seen, and that both somatic and germ line cells are affected.

Practically, the gene of interest is injected into the male pronucleus of a fertilized egg. One of the most common medical research models is the transgenic mouse.
