The aetiology of this rare condition is unknown. During the last decade the incidence of this disease has decreased whereas the incidence of bronchopulmonary dysplasia has increased. In pulmonary dysmaturity there is an increasingly abnormal air distribution with a ventilation/perfusion imbalance.
