As the reality of the loss becomes increasingly recognised, the bereaved person experiences intense longing for the deceased, becomes preoccupied with thoughts of them, and almost overwhelmed with waves of sorrow - the so called pangs of grief.

These last from a few minutes to hours, and return several times during the day, especially when offers of sympathy or other encounters or events serve as reminders of the loss. They are intense and frequent for the first week or two and then gradually begin to subside.
