Aetiological factors

Authoring team

Possible aetiological factors include:

  • age - this condition is more common in adolescence and old age
  • constitution - there is a spectrum of degrees of anxiousness in normal people and therefore there are some people who are more anxious than others. More anxious people have usually been that way since their early childhood and are also insecure, timid, and emotionally stable. These people also tend towards hypochondriasis
  • anxiety may be linked to certain stressors, for example, open spaces, cats etc. This is a phobia and is a learned phenomenon.
