Child abuse is a description applied to those actions toward children which violate social definitions of acceptable parenting or caretaking practices. The practices are unacceptable in degree and/or type, and represent an end point of actions towards children. The legal and professional responses to child abuse represent an embodiment of public opinion about children and child rearing. Within this framework there are recognised different types of child abuse.
