  • contraindications/cautions
    • contraindications include agitated states, glaucoma, cardiovascular disease, hyperthyroidism
    • cautions include mild hypertension, history of alcohol or drug abuse, depression, poorly controlled epilepsy, predisposition to tics
    • adverse effects with stimulants are probably more common in pre-school children rather than older children and these drugs should be used with particular caution, if at all, in pre-school children

Note that the manufacturer advises that these drugs are to be used with caution in Tourette's syndrome

  • but these drugs (dexamphetamine, methylphenidate) can be valuable in the treatment of hyperactivity in such children (1)
