Extrapyrimidal effects and atypical antipsychotic drugs

  • extrapyramidal effects rarely occur with clozapine
  • also, in placebo-controlled trials, the incidence of such effects was not increased by quetiapine across its full dose range
  • with amisulpride, olanzapine and risperidone, extrapyramidal effects can occur at the upper end of the licensed dose range - however, the incidence is generally low at the doses most patients receive
  • extrapyramidal effects appear to be uncommon with aripiprazole and zotepine
