Organic psychiatric disorders are psychiatric disorders which are caused by demonstrable pathology of the brain or other organ.

The causes include:

  • structural disease e.g. brain tumour
  • epilepsy
  • anoxic or hypoglycaemic brain damage
  • degenerative changes e.g. Alzheimer's dementia
  • brain trauma

Organic psychiatric disorders are classified as follows:

  • acute generalized impairment (delerium)

  • chronic impairment:
    • generalized (dementia)
    • specific syndromes
