Authoring team

Abnormal fears may be divided into those due to external stimuli and those due to internal stimuli. Only abnormal fears due to external stimuli are strictly considered to be phobias.

Classical phobias include:

  • simple phobia
  • social phobia
  • agoraphobia

Other disorders that were termed phobias in the past are now classified elsewhere. These include:

  • "illness phobias" - hypochondriasis
  • "obsessive phobias" - obsessional neurosis
