These can be classified as indications according to diagnosis or presenting complaint. Also there are so called good outcome attributes.

Psychological treatments are given when:

- it is the only treatment available - if the problem has a psychological basis - drug treatments are unacceptable to the patient - fundamental changes in an individual's perception are needed

It is given to:

- patients who are willing to interact - generally to patients with neurosis, personality and adjustment problems
