Self control techniques are taught as an adjunct to behavioural therapies, and are often based on the manipulation of the stimuli that result in an urge to do something. Thus, someone who always wants a cigarette with a cup of coffee might stop drinking coffee in order to help with their cigarette addiction.

This technique can be used with improving studying ability, or with reducing obesity.
