  • the child may not wish to go to sleep because of over- excitement or over-stimulation before bed
  • the child may not be sleepy because of sleeping late in the morning, thus having a displaced sleep pattern. In this case the child is having sufficient sleep despite going to sleep later than the parents would wish
  • normal separation anxiety - the child may be frightened of being left alone or abandoned
  • the child may be anxious because of noises in the dark or because of noises heard from downstairs
  • the child may be confused of what is expected of him/her. For example the child may be put to bed by his mother but knows that his/her father, who has yet to arrive home, is pleased to see him/her.
