Transvestism

Authoring team

Transvestism is the practice of wearing articles of clothing of the opposite sex.

It occurs more often in males. An individual may dress up in order to obtain sexual relief or before having heterosexual intercourse.

This condition may be divided into :- - simple fetishistic transvestism - when clothing has a fetishistic sexually arousing quality. - transsexualism - when the cross-dressing is a reflection of the desire to be of the opposite sex and does not have sexually arousing properties. There is a major disturbance of sexual identity.

There may be a relationship between transvestism and homosexuality.

This condition may only require treatment if the transvestite is made unhappy or if his/her sexual partner is.
