An ascending ureterogram is performed using a catheter inserted into the ureteric orifice at cystoscopy. Contrast is injected directly up the ureter - i.e. flow is retrograde - so as to visualise the ureter and collecting system.
Its main use is to outline the ureter and collecting system in patients with upper tract filling defects demonstrated by prior intravenous urography, ultrasound or antegrade urography.
