Some information concerning the prognosis in asthma is given below:

  • overall, more than 12700 people have died from asthma in England and Wales in the past decade (1)
  • mortality rate in the UK is 2-3 per 100,000 per year
  • the prognosis in childhood asthma is good, with most being symptom-free in adulthood
  • late-onset asthma is generally chronic; it usually requires more aggressive treatment
  • modern therapy improves the quality of life but does not seem to alter mortality from asthma
