Aetiology
Staphylococcal pneumonia is most commonly seen in patients who have a weakened response to infection. These include:
- children
- patients with underlying disease:
- influenza - relatively common during flu epidemics
- chronic leukaemia
- Hodgkin's disease
- cystic fibrosis
- patients on steroid therapy
Pneumonia may also arise in staphylococcal septicaemia where puncture sites may introduce infection, e.g.:
- intravenous drug abusers
- patients receiving parenteral nutrition through central catheters
