  • pneumonectomy
  • massive pleural effusion
  • empyema
  • haemothorax
  • complete lung collapse or lung consolidation
  • neoplasm:
    • mesothelioma
    • alveolar cell carcinoma
  • oedema - if patient over transfused whilst asleep on one side
  • fibrosis
  • infarction
