Synovial fluid in disease

Synovial fluid in inflammatory joint disease has the following features:

  • reduced viscosity
  • leucocytosis - particularly polymorphs
  • slight reduction in glucose level
  • an increase in fibrinogen, plasminogen and collagenases
  • low complement level associated with rheumatoid arthritis and Reiter's syndrome
  • in rheumatoid arthritis the levels of IgM and IgG are higher in the synovial fluid than in the serum
