Synovial fluid in disease
Synovial fluid in inflammatory joint disease has the following features:
- reduced viscosity
- leucocytosis - particularly polymorphs
- slight reduction in glucose level
- an increase in fibrinogen, plasminogen and collagenases
- low complement level associated with rheumatoid arthritis and Reiter's syndrome
- in rheumatoid arthritis the levels of IgM and IgG are higher in the synovial fluid than in the serum
