The anterior border of the lung roughly corresponds to the sternal reflection of the pleura on each side. It extends approximately from the apex superiorly to the level of the sixth costal cartilage on each side. It is the junction of the mediastinal and costal surfaces of the lung.
On the left, at roughly the level of the third intercostal space, the anterior border is deflected laterally to accommodate the cardiac notch.
