The eyes in thyroid disease is a subject much beloved of examiners, since there are many signs, including:

  • exophthalmos
  • lid retraction
  • lid lag
  • exophthalmic ophthalmoplegia
  • the exophthalmos may cause the patient to sleep at night with their eyes open, which results in increased susceptibility to conjunctivitis, corneal abrasion, and chemosis
