Posterior is the adjective that describes an object that is nearer to the back of the body in the anatomical position. Thus, the scapula is more posterior to the clavicle.
Dorsal is used interchangeably with posterior in comparative anatomy, neuroanatomy and embyrology where the anatomical position is not necessarily assumed. Again, it describes a point that is further towards the back of the body with reference to another point.
The dorsum of the hand is its posterior aspect in the anatomical position. Conversely, the dorsum of the foot is its superior surface. This difference is accounted for by their different directions of rotation in embryological development.
Posterior should be compared with the adjective anterior.
