Financial implications

Authoring team

The implications for a all degrees of burn injury are substantial. These are not necessarily explicit. For example, as well as the cost of immediate hospital treatment, the following should be acknowledged:

  • time off work
  • cost of rehabilitation
  • loss of earnings to employer
  • family support including time off work for caring role

Accounting for all these factors, a major burn may cost œ125,000. For each 1% total body surface area burn, 1-2 days of hospital admission may be required.
