Fluids in second 24 hour period

Authoring team

In the second 24 hour period from a major burn, fluid requirements are usually less. Maintenance fluids should continue. At this stage, colloids can be added to prevent extravascular loss. The volume to be given is estimated by the Brooke Formula: 0.5 mls of 5% albumin per kilogram of body weight per percentage total body surface area.

Again, it is important to emphasise that the rate of fluid administration should be modulated by clinical signs and tissue perfusion as indicated by urine output.
