The diagnosis of paraquat in vomit or urine may be performed with sodium dithionate as follows:

  • add alkali - sodium hydroxide or sodium bicarbonate - to 10 ml urine or gastric aspirate - until pH above 9
  • add spatula of sodium dithionate
  • shake gently
  • blue or green colour is positive for paraquat
